StudentsNS welcomes NSCC Kingstec Campus as Full Member

Students Nova Scotia (StudentsNS) is welcoming the Kingstec Nova Scotia Community College Student Association (NSCCSA) as its newest full member. Last week, the Kingstec NSCCSA’s council voted unanimously to join StudentsNS as a Full Member, joining 87% of Nova Scotia university students in the province’s primary student advocacy organization.

“We want to have a stronger voice in advocating for our students, so we’re eager to work with StudentsNS and its other members,” said Jeremy Mott, President of the Kingstec NSCCSA. “We all need to ensure post secondary education in Nova Scotia is high quality, affordable and accessible, and we’re most effective when we speak with a united voice.”

The Kingstec NSCCSA represents 907 full-time and 74 part-time students at the NSCC campus in Kentville. This is Mott’s second year as president. Joining StudentsNS has been a longtime goal for his candidacy.

“Our students are taking a lot of different education pathways, with some university graduates pursuing NSCC programs and some students doing programs with two years at community college and then two at university, so there are more issues to bring community college and university students together than ever before,” Mott said.

As Chair of StudentsNS, Amy Brierley is pleased to see the organization grow and help give community college students a stronger voice in Nova Scotia.

“We are very excited to help empower community college students and unite more post-secondary students in this province in general,” Brierley said. “We share core values with community college students, but at the same time we’re eager to adapt a new system and address these students’ specific challenges, like Nova Scotia’s dysfunctional apprenticeship system.”

The NSCC also has many more mature students with families. “In so many ways our post-secondary system falls short in supporting mature students, and working with StudentsNS we plan to change that,” Mott said.

In the past three years, StudentsNS has won $25 million in investments in the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Program and supported increases in the minimum wage to among the highest rates in Canada. These advocacy results speak to the common interests of all post-secondary students, and StudentsNS’ record in moving those common interests forward.
