Students Welcome NDP Commitment to Support First-Home Purchasing

Halifax, Nova Scotia – Nova Scotia students welcomed today’s commitment from the NDP to help graduates with student loans purchase their first home.
“Student debt forces many graduates to delay purchasing a home, because they cannot scrape together the money for a down-payment,” said StudentsNS Executive Director Jonathan Williams. “We welcome the NDP’s commitment to help graduates with debt purchase homes here in Nova Scotia and start to build equity.”
The NDP released few details on the proposal. StudentsNS is concerned about the lack of clarity around resources available for the incentive. However, StudentsNS welcomes the opportunity to work with the NDP to develop the specific mechanism, as was indicated in the NDP’s statement.
“It’s exciting for us that the NDP committed to include students in designing this program, which is how it should be done”, said Williams. “Helping young people to buy homes is a promising approach to youth attraction and retention, building on our advantage over other provinces in terms of the affordability of homes but we would need to design the mechanism carefully.”
StudentsNS is paying close attention to commitments from all parties to support students during their studies as well as after they graduate.
