Students Launch “Fund Our Future” Campaign to Modernize Financial Aid in Nova Scotia

Halifax, NS - Students Nova Scotia (StudentsNS) launches Fund Our Future, a province-wide campaign calling for stronger student financial aid that reflects the realities of today's costs of living. With tuition, housing, and food costs rising faster than student supports, the campaign highlights the urgent need for the provincial government to modernize financial aid and ensure that students can afford to learn, work, and thrive in Nova Scotia.

The campaign centres around two key recommendations:

  1. Increase the weekly maximum for student financial aid from $200/week to $300/week to reflect the true cost of attending post-secondary education in Nova Scotia.

  2. Raise the weekly maximum study period earnings that students can make while maintaining eligibility for aid from $100/week to $300/week, ensuring students can earn a fair income without having their financial aid reduced.

“Students are being asked to do the impossible, pay record high costs with outdated supports,” said Brendan Roberts, Executive Director of StudentsNS. “Modernizing financial aid isn’t just about helping students, it's about investing in Nova Scotia’s future workforce and economy.”

StudentsNS and member student organizations will be engaging students, campus groups, and communities across the province throughout the campaign, gathering stories and amplifying the reality that financial barriers are preventing too many Nova Scotians from accessing or completing their education.

“Our message is simple: financial aid must keep pace with the real costs students face,” said Rebecca Seymour, Chair of StudentsNS. “Fund Our Future is about making sure every Nova Scotian has a fair chance to succeed in post-secondary education, regardless of their background or income.”

The Fund Our Future campaign will include on-campus events, media outreach, and direct engagement with decision makers to push for these changes. With youth retention and economic growth high on the provincial agenda, students are calling on the government to act now to strengthen Nova Scotia’s future by funding its students.
